Guided Imagery Background InformationAdvocates of imagery contend that the imagination is a potent healer that has long been overlooked by practitioners of Western medicine. Imagery can relieve pain, speed healing and help the body subdue hundreds of ailments, including depression, allergies and asthma. The power of the mind to influence the body is quite remarkable. Although it isn't always curative, imagery can be helpful in the majority of the problems that people bring to the attention of their primary care physicians. In a technique called guided imagery, participants visualize a goal they want to achieve, and then imagine themselves going through the process of achieving it. Severely ill patients, for example, are urged to picture their internal organs and imagine them free of disease, or to picture tumors shrinking, or invading microorganisms succumbing to aggressive immune cells. The application to sports has been an accepted training technique for years. Visualization of the technique and the mental practicing of one's sport may be almost as good as the physical practicing of one's sport. When an athlete is sidelined with an injury such as a fracture, guided imagery can help maintain the muscle tone. Even while in a cast guided imagery can reduce the widespread muscle wasting caused by immobilization. |
